Curator's Comments: We are collectors of McColl, whom we see as an important American woman painter whose work is under represented in major collections. She hailed from St. Louis, and went West. Her training with John Fabian Carlson, another of our favorites, is seen in the use of white in this work. The work is signed and dated by McColl and additionally the verso is inscribed in the artist's hand: "The Little House / Golf Course / Rancho Santa Fe California/ Painted for Mother Feb. 1933 / Mary McColl" We would have replaced the frame, but it bears a sales label from Marshall Field & Co., with the signature "E.M. [Undecipherable]" that may be of significance. We are looking for more canvases, and would be pleased to hear from other collectors of McColl's work.
