Curator's Comments: Farndon is quickly becoming recognized as the leading maritime painter of the period following WWI, and his works are rarely available. Here he reworks the familiar theme of the moored dories to emphasize a parent-child relationship that preserves the autonomy of the smaller boat, within a context of parental security. This one always makes us think of the phrase "mother and child reunion," whenever we look at it. The image here is somewhat lighter than the actual, where the blue-grey quality of the "sea-reach" is more pronounced. There is some varnish clumping on the canvas weave in the larger boat, where Farndon has added an image of extra cordage in black, and a professional cleaning would raise the condition from very good to excellent.
