Curator's Comments: Lippincott confirms our thinking that Philadelphia, with its Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (where he studied), was the art world leader in post-Civil War, nineteenth-century America. Lippincott went to Paris in 1874, and studied with Leon Bonnat; following almost exactly in the footsteps of Eakins who deeply subscribed to this French master. Lippincott went on to exhibit in the Paris Salons until 1882, when he returned to the U.S., settling in New York City and exhibiting regularly at the National Academy of Design.

Our painting bears a handwritten artist’s sale label on its stretcher, inscribed: “The Pool / Wm. H. Lippincott / 37 West 22nd St. / New York City.” A superb example of American Barbizon, The Pool is so perfect that it makes us wonder if Lippincott could have met Corot (who passed away in the year following the American’s arrival in Paris), for the influence is so manifest. But there is more than Barbizon in the painting’s mysterious light, which continues to intrigue us. This is really a beauty and has impressed several visitors. We think it far surpasses what has crossed the block recently. Relined, with slight bitumen reaction, and in an impressive period arts & crafts frame newly regilded by Spiegel framers of New York.
