Curator's Comment:
Generally we don't sell prints, but this was so rare and so beautiful we had to own it for our collectors. Signed by Will Barnet, owned by the Oresman's, who collected some 600 paintings, drawings, prints and photographs of people reading. Barnet was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century and the supreme American print maker. In 2011, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts, which was presented by President Obama in a White House ceremony. Will Barnet typically retained his proof copies for his final inventory. But the Oresman's were among his most important private patrons. Only a single numbered copy of this work was listed in the final inventory, instead of the actual artist's proof, which we now offer. Robert Yahner, Barnet's studio assistant during the artist's working residence at the National Arts Club, identifies the subject as Ona, Barnet's daughter. Her quest to know more contrasts (black feline coat vs. black female hair) the cat's contentment with self-knowledge, making for our "Tiger Mom" special!
